Microneedling (SkinPen)

Microneedling in San Francisco, San Jose, & Nearby CA, Areas

Do you have scars, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, or other cosmetic issues? Microneedling is a treatment that may be able to help.

This non-invasive FDA procedure can improve your skin’s appearance and make you look younger. Ellis Eye & Laser Medical Center offers microneedling in San Jose, as well as at our other offices.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a method to rejuvenate your skin to make it look younger and brighter. It also may reduce fine lines, wrinkles, scars from acne, stretch marks, and brown spots.

A dermatologist or an aesthetician can perform microneedling treatment. First, they will apply a cream to the area being treated to help numb it.

Once the treatment area is completely numbed, your doctor will use a pen-sized tool with a small roller on the end. The roller has thin stainless-steel needles that create tiny pricks in your skin. The process encourages your body to produce collagen.

What does microneedling do?

Woman having Microneedling in El Cerrito

Microneedling uses a FDA approved handheld device to reverse signs of aging and minimize the appearance of scars to reveal restored youthful glowing skin!

When you think of needles, you probably associate pain with the treatment however the microneedles are so fine you shouldn’t feel any discomfort. The pinpricks from microneedling are like tiny wounds in your skin. Your body responds to the “injury” by producing more collagen. Collagen is a protein the body produces and uses to make skin, bones, and muscles. Collagen makes your skin strong and flexible.

As people age, their body starts producing less collagen. When there’s less collagen in the skin, wrinkles start to appear. The extra collagen your body makes after microneedling fills in scars and wrinkles. As a result, your skin looks younger and firmer.

Microneedling is most frequently used on the face, but it also works in other areas. It can also help reduce stretch marks in places like the stomach or on the thighs.

Can you get microneedling more than once?

It may take several rounds of microneedling to get the desired results. Most people need four to six sessions but Dr. Ellis suggests having three treatments about 4-6 weeks apart to achieve optimal results. With a 98% satisfaction rate, you’re going to love your skin after microneedling sessions.

You may also need other treatments to maintain the results. The specialists at Ellis Eye can develop a complete treatment plan for you.

How long does it take to recover after having microneedling?

Your skin starts healing right away! There are very few signs that you had the treatment just hours before such as minor redness for a few days, and you might have minor pain in the treated area. Dr. Ellis applies a soothing mask or serum afterwards to minimize the appearance of redness and decrease swelling. It is very unlikely you’ll bleed or notice any bruising after having microneedling. You should be able to maintain your normal activities after a microneedling session.

Example of Acne Scar with MicroneedlingWho should get microneedling?

Microneedling is an option for people who want to reduce scars, like those you get from acne. The process can also reduce age spots or even out your skin tone.

It’s also a good choice if you’re looking for an anti-aging treatment but don’t want to have cosmetic surgery.

Who shouldn’t get microneedling?

The process is safe and non-invasive, but it’s not right for everyone. Your doctor might advise against it if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Suffer from psoriasis or eczema
  • Have an active case of acne
  • Have had radiation therapy in the past few months

Who can perform microneedling?

Board-certified doctors can perform the process in California. Doctors who perform microneedling usually specialize in dermatology, plastic surgery, or cosmetic surgery.

You may find do-it-yourself microneedling tools, also known as rollers, for sale. But doctors and other experts caution against performing the process at home.

It’s important to sterilize the needles on the roller so you don’t get an infection. This is something that’s very difficult to do at home by yourself.

Home roller tools don’t work as well as professional tools because the needles are shorter. For the best results, you’re better off visiting a professional to have microneedling.
